CONGREGATIONAL HYMNS

(S. M.) R. C. H. 546

by JOHN ERNEST BODE, 1816-74

Commit thou all thy griefs
"Cast your cares on the Lord he will sustain you" Psalm. 55:22
Commit thou all thy griefs
And ways into His hands,
To His sure truth and tender care,
Who earth and heaven commands.
Who points the clouds their course,
Whom winds and seas obey,
He shall direct the wandering feet,
Who shall prepare thy way.
Thou on the Lord rely,
So safe shalt thou go on;
Fix on His work thy steadfast eye,
So shall thy work be done.
No profit canst thou gain
By self consuming care;
To Him command thy course; His ear
Attends the softest prayer.
PAUL GERHARDT, 1607-76; tr. By JOHN WESLEY, 1708-91.

O Jesus, I have promise
"Whoever serves me must follow me" John 12:26
O Jesus, I have promise
To serve Thee to the end;
Be Thou for ever near me,
My master and my Friend:
I shall not fear the battle
If Thou art by my side,
Nor wander from the pathway
If Thou wilt be my guide
O let me hear Thee speaking
In accents clear and still.
Above the storms of passion?
The murmurs of self-will:
O speak to reassure me,
To hasten or control;
O speak and make me listen,
Thou guardian of my soul.
O Jesus, thou hast promised,
To all who follow Thee,
That where thou art in glory
There shall Thy servant be; °
And, Jesus, I have promised
To serve Thee to the end:
O give me grace to follow,
My master and my friend.
